Synthesized Data

RTI has been developing synthesized agent databases of human and livestock populations in support of MIDAS. These data support the ABM modeling efforts of various MIDAS model developers. For detailed information on the currently available data, contact wdw@rti.org.

Completed Synthesized Databases

2005-2009 Version 1 U.S. Synthesized Population Database

RTI has completed Version 1 of a new synthesized human population database that is based on the 2005-2009 American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year data. This database contains geographically located synthetic households and household residents for the United States and Puerto Rico. A new publication describing the method for creating the data and a detailed user guide are under development. The available Quick Start Guide describes the basic content and structure of the data. The 2005-2009 Version 1 synthetic database is available for download by state or county below. The previous synthesized population database (created from the 2000 decennial census data) is still available by request. Email Bill Wheaton (wdw@rti.org) for more information.

U.S. Poultry Farms

RTI has also completed a synthesized poultry farm database containing synthetically generated and located poultry farms attributed with type of poultry (e.g. broiler, fryer, pullet, etc.) and counts (ranges) of birds on each farm. Preliminary papers describing the synthesized poultry farm data and data development methods are available from 2008 ESRI Federal User Conference paper and RTI's presentation at the ESRI Federal Users Conference 2008. The 2002 Census of Agriculture poultry farm counts were the basis for the number of farms synthesized.

U.S. Swine Farms

RTI has completed a synthesized swine farm database containing synthetically generated and located swine farms attributed with counts (ranges) of swine on each farm. This initial version was created using the same suitability surface that was used for the synthetic poultry as they have many similar factors that affect their placement. Preliminary papers describing the synthesized poultry farm data and data development methods are available from 2008 ESRI Federal User Conference paper and RTI's presentation at the ESRI Federal Users Conference 2008.The 2007 Census of Agriculture swine farm counts were the basis for the number of farms synthesized. A simple data dictionary is here: Synthetic Swine Data Dictionary.

On-going and Future Synthesized Database Development

We are embarking on efforts to develop tools for generating custom synthesized human agent populations. These tools would allow the user to select the demographic variables of interest to be used in generating the households for the synthetic database.

We also plan to generate a new U.S. synthetic population database in 2011 that will be based on 2010 census data.

We are currently working on synthetic databases of cattle, sheep, and other livestock for the U.S..

2005-2009 Version 1 U.S. Synthesized Population Downloads

The 2005-2009 U.S. Synthesized Population data can be downloaded directly by state or county. Each data package (either entire states or entire counties) are delivered as a set of compressed ASCII files. The links below allow you to download these compressed ASCII file packages. The Quick Start Guide describes the contents and structure of each file in each dataset.

Download by State or County

Synthetic Poultry Farms

The U.S. synthesized poultry farm dataset is also available for download. The data are available in ESRI shapefile format at the links below.

Study Area Compressed file (size in MB)
Entire U.S. US_SynPoultryPts_Ver1_1c.zip (8.5MB)

US_SynPoultryPts_Ver1_1c.tar.gz (8.5MB)

*some browser/O.S. combinations will create a file extension of '.tar.tar' when uncompressing the '.tar.gz' files. If this occurs, just rename the '.tar.tar' file to '.tar' prior to untarring.

Synthetic Swine Farms

The U.S. synthesized swine (hog) farm dataset is also available for download. The data are available in ESRI shapefile format at the link below.

Study Area Compressed file (size in MB)
Lower 48 States US_SynSwine_April2010.zip (8 MB)
